About

Pianist
Sterre Hond (2001) is a classical pianist and composer with a fondness for the Romantic and Impressionist repertoire. In addition to these artistic influences, the fact that Sterre has synesthesia has a special impact on her musicianship. Through her synesthesia, she sees colors associated with different tones and harmonies while playing the piano. During concerts and workshops, she shares her colorful sensory world as a synesthete. She does this through personal stories and self-made light projections that visualize the colors she experiences in that moment. "My vision is to show that classical music is not dusty or boring. By integrating light projections into my concerts, I want to show that classical music belongs to the present. The light projections transform the concert hall into a magical, multisensory experience." Sterre is currently studying for her master's degree at the Prince Claus Conservatoire with Paul Komen. In 2024, she obtained her bachelor's degree at Codarts, where she studied with pianist Bart van de Roer. She has also won several prizes, including the International Young Talent Award at the Festival d'Anniviers in Switzerland. Sterre has performed live several times on NPO Klassiek. In 2024, she appeared alongside Wibi Soerjadi at TivoliVredenburg during the NPO Podcast Festival "Keihard Klassiek." In 2025, Sterre was a guest on Radio 1 in De nacht van..., a program by BNNVARA.

Composer
"Growing up in a classical environment, I didn't realize at the time that I could do more than just be a classical pianist. Classical music is my great passion, something I will never let go of. But what gives me enormous energy is the realization that I can let my creativity flow freely between the many facets of the musical and artistic world." Sterre Hond has developed from a classical pianist into a versatile, creative, and interdisciplinary artist: an emerging film composer who also writes her own concert works. Graduated as a classical pianist from the Rotterdam Conservatoire, Sterre discovered during her studies her passion for composing and improvising. She writes both concert pieces and music for film. Her unique ability to perceive colors while playing the piano — synesthesia — makes her composing process special. Her works are auditory paintings, and the piano keys are her color palette. In her own words: "I see myself as a kind of musical alchemist. For me, music is always a multisensory experience, so it feels only natural to express myself in this way." Her refined and sensitive playing and compositional style set her apart from others. With her music, she aims to capture and express the mystical and mysterious sides of life. On stage, Sterre enhances her compositions with transformative light projections, creating multidisciplinary concerts that make synesthesia tangible for her audience. In addition, she releases her own music. Since 2023, Sterre has been working as an assistant to film composer Alex Simu. She performed the piano parts for the documentaries Mother Suriname and Nesjomme. Nesjomme won the Golden Calf Award for Best Documentary in 2025. The music, composed by Alex Simu, was also nominated. Currently, Sterre and Alex Simu are co-composing the score for a documentary that will premiere soon. In 2025, Sterre was selected for several (international) talent programs for film composers. She is part of the Third Character Project, an initiative by the Festival International Music & Cinema Marseille and Sacem, taking place in Ghent during the WSA Film Music Day. She was also selected for the Script & Score Program, a collaboration between the Netherlands Film Festival and Buma Music in Motion, as well as the IDFA Academy, where she connects with filmmakers from IDFA Project Space NL. Sterre has performed live several times on NPO Klassiek with her own compositions. Future
Sterre is in the final year of her Master's degree in Classical Music at the Prince Claus Conservatoire, where she studies with Paul Komen. She is preparing for new concerts in which she combines classical works with her own compositions and light projections. In addition, Sterre is challenging herself technically by mastering the visual programming software TouchDesigner, allowing her to refine her light projections even further and make them audio-reactive. Sterre is part of the team of Stille Resonantie (Silent Resonance), a project by Thomas Brand that explores how music can resonate deeply within the body and soul — even without sound. Together with flutist Firiël Werners, she forms a duo with which she organizes both classical and improvisation concerts. In addition, she is currently working on her debut EP featuring her own compositions.
